Discovery Bible Study

OK, so you’ve completed the hard work of the first steps in your relationship with your new friend.  You have identified them as a Yellow Light, someone who has heard a clear Gospel message, but isn’t sure that they are ready to believe.  Now you are ready to take the next steps with them to help them understand who Jesus is.  This may be a process that you will only be able to start, and will hand off to our team on the ground here in Italy, but if you can get to this point and things are going well, these are the people that we want to continue to work with to go as far as they will allow!

Discussion questions for your team meeting:

  • What are you thankful for since the last lesson?  What has been difficult or frustrating?  Were you able to finish your assignments from the last lesson?
  • Why do you think it is called a Discovery Bible Study?
  • Why would you want to ask questions and not be the teacher in your new group?
  • Which part of the Discovery Bible Study is the most important, in your opinion?  Why?

Group Practice

Get together in groups of 4-5 people within your team.  Pick one of the stories from the Stories of Hope list and follow the list of questions from the video to use in your study.  You can pick a leader and then use the Discovery Bible Study Question Reference to help them lead the discussion for the group.

Below are the list of the Stories of Hope that our team frequently uses in initial meetings. You can select the story that may most closely connect to your new friend’s story and background:

  • Luke 7:36–50 – Hope for the Rejected
  • Luke 18:9–17 – Hope for the Non-Religious
  • Luke 18:18–30 – Hope Changes Things
  • Matthew 18:21–35 – Hope Forgives
  • Luke 22:66–23:25 Hope Through Death
  • Luke 24:1–20 – Hope Rose from the Dead
  • Luke 15:11–32 – Hope is Waiting for You

Lesson Homework

If possible, and if they are a Yellow Light, invite your new Muslim friend to bring one or two friends to read through the first of the Stories of Hope with you.  If possible, create a small group to read and discuss the stories together.

If you do not have a Yellow Light friend, meet together with 2-3 people outside of your team.  Read one of the Stories of Hope together with them and lead the group using the Discovery Bible Study process.
